On January 30th and 31st, the streets of the city of Aosta host an annual event highlighting the fruits of Aosta Valley’s craftsmanship: the Sant’Orso Fair, also known as La Saint Ours. Artisans take the spotlight with their works: sculptures, carving, weaving. Wood is certainly the “king” of the Sant’Orso Fair in Aosta, but there are also stunning examples of soapstone, iron, copper, ceramic, glass, textiles, and lace works, showcasing the skills and imagination of artisans and hobbyists.

The year 1000 is considered the “zero” year of the Sant’Orso Fair. Legend has it that everything began in the area of the Church of Saint Orso. Right in front of the Church, the Saint, who lived before the 9th century, used to distribute clothes and “Sabot”, the typical wooden shoes still present at the Fair today, to the poor. Nowadays, the entire city center is involved in the event, which has transformed into a grand celebration. The two days offer an opportunity for artisans, visitors, and enthusiasts to meet, chat, exchange ideas and suggestions, and come into contact with a world of gestures passed down from generation to generation that still lives and evolves today, in the digital age.

The Fair is also about music and folklore, an opportunity to participate in tastings and a chance to witness live demonstrations and discover the trades of your ancestors.
